Important Tax Dates and Deadlines

Please note that this calendar provides tax dates for federal tax returns only. Deadlines for filing state tax returns (if applicable) may vary by state. Please contact your State Department of Taxation for details.  

 

January 16, 2018

  • Fourth Quarter 2017 Estimated Taxes Due: Final installment of your 2017 estimated taxes must be postmarked by this date. You have the option to skip this final payment if you file your 2017 return and pay any tax due by January 31. 

 

January 31, 2018

  • Filing Deadline If Final Installment of 2017 Estimated Taxes Were Not Paid: You can avoid late penalties for skipping the fourth-quarter payment of your 2017 estimated taxes by filing your 2017 tax return and paying any tax due on or before January 31.

 

February 15, 2018

  • Income Tax Withholding: If you claimed exemption from income tax withholding in 2017, you must file a new W-4 form by this date to continue your exemption status for another year.

 

April 1, 2018

  • Beginning Date for Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): If you reached age 70½ in 2017, you must begin taking required minimum distributions from your IRA by this date. A 50% excise tax may apply if you miss taking this RMD or don’t take out enough.

 

April 17, 2018

  • Income Tax Returns Due: 2017 tax returns must be postmarked by midnight, April 17, unless an extension has been filed.
  • Extension Forms Due: If you need more time to prepare your 2017 tax return, you can file for an automatic 6-month extension of time to file the return. This must be done before midnight, April 17.  
  • First Quarter 2018 Estimated Taxes Due:  The first installment of your 2018 estimated taxes must be postmarked by April 17.
  • 2017 Retirement Contributions: April 17 is the last day to make 2017 contributions to a Traditional or Roth IRA for 2017.

 

June 15, 2018

  • Second Quarter 2018 Estimated Taxes Due: The second installment of your 2018 estimated taxes must be postmarked by June 15.
  • Filing Deadline for Individuals Residing Outside of the United States: If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working outside of the U.S., you must file your 2018 tax return and pay any tax due by this date.

 

September 17, 2018

  • Third Quarter 2018 Estimated Taxes Due: The third installment of your 2018 estimated taxes must be postmarked by September 17.

 

October 15, 2018

  • Extended Tax Returns Due: If you filed for an automatic 6-month extension on April 17, you must complete and postmark your 2017 tax return by this date.
  • 2017 Roth IRA Conversions: If you converted a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA in 2017, you have until October 15 to “recharacterize” or undo the conversion. This may be helpful if your IRA has suffered losses since the conversion. Please talk to your financial and tax advisors for details.

 

December 31, 2018

  • Required Minimum Distributions Due: This is the deadline for taking RMDs in the year after your first RMD and in each year thereafter. Please note that if you took your first RMD in April 2018 (for your 2017 RMD), you must take your second RMD by December 31, 2018. 

 

January 15, 2019

  • Fourth Quarter 2018 Estimated Taxes Due: If you are self-employed and have fourth-quarter income that requires you to pay estimated taxes, please make sure that your payment is postmarked by this date.
