Important Tax Dates and Deadlines

Please note that this calendar provides tax dates for federal tax returns only. Deadlines for filing state tax returns (if applicable) may vary by state. Please contact your State Department of Taxation for details.  

 

January 15, 2019

  • Fourth Quarter 2018 Estimated Taxes Due: Final installment of your 2018 estimated taxes must be postmarked by this date. You have the option to skip this final payment if you file your 2018 return and pay any tax due by January 31. 

 

January 31, 2019

  • Filing Deadline If Final Installment of 2018 Estimated Taxes Were Not Paid: You can avoid late penalties for skipping the fourth-quarter payment of your 2018 estimated taxes by filing your 2018 tax return and paying any tax due on or before January 31.

 

February 15, 2019

  • Income Tax Withholding: If you claimed exemption from income tax withholding in 2018, you must file a new W-4 form by this date to continue your exemption status for another year.

 

April 1, 2019

  • Beginning Date for Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): If you reached age 70½ in 2018, you must begin taking required minimum distributions from your IRA by this date. A 50% excise tax may apply if you miss taking this RMD or don’t take out enough.

 

April 15, 2019

  • Income Tax Returns Due: 2018 tax returns must be postmarked by midnight, April 15, unless an extension has been filed.
  • Extension Forms Due: If you need more time to prepare your 2018 tax return, you can file for an automatic 6-month extension of time to file the return. This must be done before midnight, April 15.  
  • First Quarter 2019 Estimated Taxes Due:  The first installment of your 2019 estimated taxes must be postmarked by April 15.
  • 2018 Retirement Contributions: April 15 is the last day to make 2018 contributions to a Traditional or Roth IRA for 2018.

 

June 17, 2019

  • Second Quarter 2019 Estimated Taxes Due: The second installment of your 2019 estimated taxes must be postmarked by June 17.
  • Filing Deadline for Individuals Residing Outside of the United States: If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working outside of the U.S., you must file your 2019 tax return and pay any tax due by this date.

 

September 16, 2019

  • Third Quarter 2019 Estimated Taxes Due: The third installment of your 2019 estimated taxes must be postmarked by September 16.

 

October 15, 2019

  • Extended Tax Returns Due: If you filed for an automatic 6-month extension on April 15, you must complete and postmark your 2018 tax return by this date.
  • 2018 Roth IRA Conversions: If you converted a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA in 2018, you have until October 15 to “recharacterize” or undo the conversion. This may be helpful if your IRA has suffered losses since the conversion. Please talk to your financial and tax advisors for details.

 

December 31, 2019

  • Required Minimum Distributions Due: This is the deadline for taking RMDs in the year after your first RMD and in each year thereafter. Please note that if you took your first RMD in April 2019 (for your 2018 RMD), you must take your second RMD by December 31, 2019. 

 

January 15, 2020

  • Fourth Quarter 2019 Estimated Taxes Due: If you are self-employed and have fourth-quarter income that requires you to pay estimated taxes, please make sure that your payment is postmarked by this date.
